Today I went into a pet store to buy some cat food and came out with a hamster. Now before you all judge me as a very nasty person the hamster was an impulse buy and will not be fed to the cat at any point. The hamster looked awkward and a little out of place and I thought that it was a good metaphor for me in America so I purchased her. I have named her Sergeant Squeaks because normal pet names aren’t something that I can do.
The sales assistant in the store asked me if I was 18, presumably because adults don’t buy hamsters as an impulse buy and she also picked up on my accent and asked if I was just visiting the US which amused me a little. It’s not very often that people buy hamsters when they are on vacation in another country! She was very nice though and informed me that the type of hamster I chose wasn’t the “most bitey” type which I feel is an important characteristic when buying a hamster.
Once we got home I set about setting up the hamster cage while my wife played with the hamster and the cat stalked all of us. Sammy followed the hamsters every move and we kept having to shoo him away. It’s safe to say that they will be occupying separate rooms for a while but my wife and I had great fun watching him try to stalk the hamster from all angles before realising that the cage bars were too narrow for him to reach her. Crisis averted!
What do you make of my new look blog theme? I’m still undecided as to whether it’s an improvement!
Old England to New England 
First, congratulations on the addition to your family! Hamsters and I don’t generally get along; but I have friends whose hamsters and cats have co-existed for quite some time.
I like the new cleaner looking blog, but I’ve found that blogging is for you first and foremost – your readers are happy if you are happy.
Thank you, that’s a good point. I wanted opinions just to make sure it didn’t look awful though. I think the next few weeks are going to involve keeping cat and hamster apart as much as possible!

Congrats on the new addition! Sergeant Squeaks…that is just brilliant! My cat would never sleep again just knowing there was a smaller furry creature in the house…
Thanks Karen, I’m glad you like the change, I think I’d had the last theme for so long I needed a new look. Our cat is being very naughty, trying to stalk Sgt Squeaks from all angles so he is now locked out of the room! 🙂
mmmm my only memory of a hampster is when my daughter was ” hampster sitting” couldn’t sleep because it keep going round and round on a squeaky wheel..so removed the wheel and put the cage on the bathroom floor….on picking up the said cage the next morning I had a lovely, perfectly round hole in my carpet..as removing the wheel gave it access to my carpet…did we hampster sit again..take a guess 🙂
Oh no, that must have been really frustrating! Hamsters really do like to chew everything but this one is going to be kept away from anything he can damage, we already have the cat scratching everything!

I liked the old photo with the flags, but the lighthouse is also lovely.
Squeaks is adorable. Did you buy her a liberty ball yet? Pretty sure Sammy wants her to have one.
I may go back to a flag image soon but the image I have isn’t sharp enough for this theme. Getting her a ball is the next thing on my list, it’s going to drive Sammy mad though!
